PRIYANKA ANUSH : INTIMATE WEDDING IN ORCHHA

You know when you feel like following the gut and going by your instincts. This was it. When Priyanka first called me for her wedding, I knew I would really love to be a part of it.

This beautiful intimate wedding took place at Orchha, Madhya Pradesh. And kudos to the couple who chose this place to get married. Orchha is a part of Bundelkhand region and I was most excited to visit place as the tale tells us that Mastani hails from this region. Orchha with population close top only 8,000 is a quaint little town that you can practically walk around.

Now enough of the place but trust me it is a part of me. You know you just instantly feel connected to a place, this was it for me. The travel was the most fun part of it. I was shooting a wedding in Pune just before this one, hence my travel started from Pune. So I drove from Pune to Mumbai Airport, Took a flight from Mumbai to Bhopal, Took a train from Bhopal to Jhansi and then again drove a few hours from Jhansi to Orchha all in a day.

Now for some couple portraits we managed during our time there. Hope guys like them.

Seldom you get people and couples especially in my kind of profession that you connect with. Priyanka and Anush had an effortless style and chemistry to them and I was happy to be witnessing it.

PRASHANSA & DANIEL : PUNE CHRISTIAN WEDDING

It is on few moments that you get to notice, simplicity, genuinity and grace all at the same time. This Christian ceremony in Pune at Oxford Golf Club was an endearing ceremony to witness. Prashansa and Danny were surrounded by all close family and friends and I felt all emotional about this.

I am happy at such occasions. True to the spirit occasions ! Here are a few pictures I took that day and I hope you are able to feel what I felt !

SNEHA NISHANT : COUPLE PORTRAITS IN MUMBAI

Sneha and Nishant wanted early morning portraits around Mumbai. These two have been together for almost a decade and it is beautiful to witness stories like these.

I also took pictures for them at their wedding and I should be able to put them up soon.

I know this space has been dull for some time now but I think I can take liberty to say that some good work was keeping me away and I promise to put it up as soon as possible.

THE ART OF PONDI

I got an opportunity to visit Chennai recently for a gorgeous intimate engagement. The weather was absolutely horrible and that is all I can recollect of the trip as there no ounce of the monsoon we experience in Mumbai but all humidity. I like Chennai as a city but not so much for the weather. The thing that i am most excited about my trips to Chennai is the saree shopping. I WILL NOT miss going to Chinnaswamy Chetty Silk Saree shop.  And I did not this time also and ended up buying sarees, you just can’t help, can you?!

Anyway, so, after the engagement we made a quick trip to Pondicherry for a few hours for the couple portraits. Pondicherry is beautiful and I would have liked more time there but in that short time managed to take a few of these shots for INDULGE.

Also, worked on a few videos that I am extremely excited about. So, the youtube channel will also be up soonest. I am nervous and excited at the same time. Hope you like what you see and read here. Over to the pictures now,

This song plays in loop, I think you guys might like it. BEWAJAH

SHRUTI & RUSHABH : FRIENDSHIP TO COURTSHIP

It's been quite a lull here, but I promise to make it up to you with some heartfelt stories coming your way. The wedding season is on for 2015 -2016 and it looks bright with me traveling length and breadth of the country and one more happy happenstance. But let's keep that to be the cherry on the cake :)

It's a story of friends that I bring to you today and it is nothing short of amazing. I am absolutely in love with these two and looking forward to document their wedding too.

JUST MY TYPE

I recently got an invitation by Adfactors PR to view an art installation. As an art installation of this kind was unheard of in India. It was a piece made from typewriters.

Anushree Gavas Mumbai Lifestyle Blogger

Typewriters have always fascinated me and so I was quite curious to go see the art installation. A typewriter still proudly sits on my desk along with a desktop, I don't use it much apart from writing letters to my husband (yes, we are very old school.) It is a beautiful to feel the letters on the other side of the page.

My mother who works for Maharashtra State Government had been using a typewriter until much recently when her office decide to go with :computerisation" (they had Godrej and Remington typewriters functional at their office) . I do feel happy to know that the Indian High Commission in London has reverted to using typewriters. From the two exams that she gave to get this particular job was a typewriting test (Maharashtra Public Service Commission & Typewriting Test). Typewriting test use to be quite a big deal back then and a good speed ensured a "government job". Please do see the video below from one of the Typewriting competitions.

Abhishek Jain won the typewriting completion back in 1995 and incidentally it happened to be a Godrej & Boyce typewriter.

Godrej Archives is committed to document the history of Godrej manufacturing in a visual and a text format and I was fortunate to be invited to this event in presence of the driving force of Godrej Archives, Pheroza Godrej and Navroze Godrej.

Godrej & Boyce stopped the production of typewriters in 2011 (The factory was in Satara, Maharashtra) and are now working on a book that documents the typewriters left in the country, whatever condition that they are in. So if you have a typewriter story get in touch with me or Godrej Archives directly.

Anushree Gavas Mumbai Lifestyle Blogger

The art installation was at Godrej Hubble opened in 2014 - Hs designed to be a space where people can share their ideas, network with each other and build communities. I have always believed that community over competition will always take us ahead. Thats the idea that thrives here and also at Google office when I got to visit them for a Youtube Creators Workshop.

Jeremy Mayers was invited by Godrej to make an art piece paying homage to their erstwhile product line. Mayer and team team of two boys, I am sure must be quite a happy team. Just like boys in a toyshop ! Jeremy is well know world around to create anthropomorphic sculptures through typewriters that reach him serendipitously. It is interesting to learn that he has never bought a typewriter to make a piece of art but friends and families and acquaintances world over have made sure that a typewriter reaches him.

Jeremy uses as little as possible of any foreign objects or methods such as welding, gluing etc.

"Lotus" and "Mandalas" were created by Mayers inspired from 5 months that he spent here as an Artist-in-Residence at Godrej archives campus. He started working on this installation as a part of Godrej & Boyce project. This project "Encourages encourages artist across the globe to restore, recreate and reimagine the past in order to create art that will inspire the future."

Restore. Recreate. Reimagine is the motto for Godrej Hubble, Godrej Archives and India culture Lab.

When I get a fortune cookie, I break the cookie, put the fortune aside and eat the cookie. Working with my sculptures is similar. I don’t wish to know their future.

The 13- foot high sculpture is displayed at Godrej Hubble and will be there till the time permits. Jeremy along with his team has used 60 typewriters from the last batch of  typewriters. It consists of 15 petals with each petal being made with more than 200 parts from the typewriters. For this piece Jeremy has used some fabrication invisible to our eyes.

To head to the future is a nice path to take but I am a dweller of the past. As much as Jeremy's Lotus is beautiful to look at and makes us hopeful of the future to have a strong connect to old anecdotes , I am sad to see the dis-assembling of typewriter. Perhaps one day someone will be dis-assembling any post new age piece to take a path that takes us to the times gone by.

Also, I have to have to say that I am extremely happy with the initiative like Godrej Archives. We need documentation of everything that have and I would love to see how they take this mammoth task upon them. Warm wishes to them !

THE ETHNIC EDGE

I find myself going for smart-casual kurtas, stoles, dupattas, palazzos (my currents love) to dress for any sort of occasion. The new age ethnic wear seamlessly transcends into smart work wear to evening wear. I love anything that has Indianness to it. I can't help but fall in love with paisley pattern every now and then.

Case in point , PIKU. I saw the movie recently and am bowled over by Deepika's look in it. Films have always given us some really fantastic fashion inspirations. The work wear is kept practical and so chic and I love the bindi.

                                                                   Image : Jabong

Lifestyle stores brings us this amazing look through Melange. Melange is an exclusive ethnic brand from Lifestyle and they had made the look available in stores. The Piku Lifestyle collection got noticed by various fashion bloggers like me and they created their own Piku Melange inspired looks. I am in line of creating one of my own and will be up on the blog soon.

I am sure by now you would want to go shopping but the rains outside wouldn't allow you and it would have been so nice if similar ethnic fusion wear was available somewhere online. Ofcpurse you can buy Melange Collection through Jabong

But if you are looking for more, here come NAARI. Go check Naari for their amazing kurti, slim pants, palazzos and dupatta collection. These are some of my favourites.

THEY WILL MAKE YOU EXTRA HAPPY

When couples approach me to document their wedding, the succeeding question they ask is to suggest wedding filmmakers, make-up and hair artists and others relevant to their wedding day needs. Who to look for when you are ready to get married is perhaps the most difficult task of every wedding. So here, I am trying to simplify this for you with good solutions that I have found over time. (This is a list of some wonderful artists and brands that I know or have worked with or have loved too much !)

From Wedding Stationery to Wedding Décor, from Cinematographers to Art Essentials for your special day, a wedding is a culmination of these distinctive little things that add up together for your big day.

Cinematographers : The Marigold Company by Anvitha Pillai & Naveen Yadav, Chennai.

This extremely talented duo ensures that your day is captured with utmost attention to details.

What I love about The Marigold Company is primarily their choice of music. With an ideal soundtrack to your ceremony, Anvitha & Naveen add the right elements of emotions and the closest set of people into the frame and they do it just beautifully!

Pretty you :  Mogra

One of the dilemmas you might face as a bride is  atleast half a dozen of new articles in your wardrobe. And me as a bride I knew I wanted more than just sarees and salwar suits and lehengas. I wanted dressed and tops but also still wanted to look a bit of a "newly wed" ! I wish I knew Mogra then ! Western outfits with an Indian touch, my nod goes for it !

Introducing Mogra by Sheena Roy ! I was introduced to this Pune based brand very recently, and can't get over their innovative use of giving a whole new avatar to saris by getting them in dresses and tops! If you’re looking for a unique dress for your haldi day or wedding brunch with a dash of Indian-ness, try Mogra. A top pick for your non-traditional days! I massively love sarees and salwar suits which I can wear on normal days and just look Indian and not too festive.

The best part is that Mogra also gives you the option to rake through your wardrobe and send them your very own sarees ( that really see the light of the day in ages ) to have them transformed into Mogra designs ! I know I am scoring through my closet this weekend as I have some 25 sarees already and I would love a new look to them !

Pretty you : AKA Bespoke

383529_605617732791482_802068015_n.jpg

‘a.k.a. bespoke’ is an accessories brand for the ladies and gentlemen of the 21st century. It was started by aeiman. karan. ateev. - Three friends and designers, each with a very distinct style but common passion ~ to create beautiful, timeless pieces to express their love for design.

After graduating from the prestigious Cordwainers - London College of Fashion, they decided to establish their brand to cater to a niche group of clients, as limited in number as their collections and just as sharply discerning.

They believe in exclusive, bespoke creations - to delve deep into each client’s wants and wishes and handcraft painstakingly, speciality footwear and bags like no other.

I also had the opportunity to be in front of the camera for their very first collection and hence I have literally seen this grand grow to the runway shows. Aka has made bespoke shoes for  Rahul Mishra at the Paris Fashionweek.

ore closer to home they have also designed shoes for Ritu Kumar, Priyadarshini Rao, Nimish Shah and many more..

Exclusive retail collections of a.k.a. bespoke shoes are available at ‘Bungalow 8’ and ‘MAL’ in Mumbai and ‘White’ in New Delhi.

Wedding Stationery : The Shaadi Project by The Post box

The Postbox is an e-commerce platform where designers, graphic artists and photographers come together to create a visually inspiring canvas. I am lucky to call Madhuvanthi Senthilkumar & Nikhil Joseph my friends who are the brains behind this wonderful venture.

I have seen the growth of The Postbox right from where it was just an idea to the heights it has reached now. And now The Postbox team will be catering to the shaadi people through The Shaadi Project !

This is something I am very optimistic about considering my love for stationery. I know how essential is the wedding stationery because thats the first look people get to your wedding. I know how my husband and me were particular about having classic and minimalistic wedding invites. So much so that we had to design and get them printed ourselves.

I am sure of the brilliance of design with "The Shaadi Project as they have an army of artists ready to take on work for this.

Come April first week, Madhuvanthi & Nikhil will launch "The Shaadi Project" a one stop shop for customized design for your invitation cards, props and wedding gifts and wedding favors.

More updates on this coming soon !

BLACK AND WHITE

One day I really wish to document a wedding in only black and white and possibly on Ilford : )

But meanwhile here are some other black and white images.

shimla times
Daisy and Nikhil's wedding venue, Shimla. February 2015.

And amidst the beautiful Shimla hills I met Kismet of The Unreal Bride

It was rather a beautiful surprise that the couple booked us both seperatly : ) And it was nothing but such a joy working with her. I hope to bump into her more often !

kismet

Also met Mehlum on his yet another trip to India. We went wandering about on the streets on Bombay and took these few pictures of him.

mehlum 1

These pictures are taken by Nikon 50mm 1.2 which is a manual focus lens. And I am absolutely in love with it !

It was my second time shooting with Nikon and I might just be tipping towards it, just like Ram Balmur who recently switched his whole Canon equipment to Nikon. I think I will follow suit sometime : ) Though I still have to do my homework for it.

Mehlum

We met again at Banganga and here is the set of images he took of me on his Tumblr page.

I haven't been posting much of wedding work here but I am behind editing 8 weddings and so many many more updates.

Next post will be a glimpse of the beautiful couples I got to meet.

Also I have been working on a brand ideology for "Serendipity" and also possibly a new look for the blog. But I am too attached to the current layout so you guys can help me make a decision.

Till then, love!

HARMONY IN GREYSCALE

It's always been a black and white image that has held my attention for the longest.

It is something about the monotones that intrigue me always.

Always.

The next is minimalism in a frame.

I like that it leaves some room for me to make my own meaning to it.

I recently came across some brilliant strokes by artist Tasneem Amiruddin and I am happy to call her my friend. I am taking the liberty to publish her work here without speaking to her only because it is in good faith and her work has inspired me so much. It is classic !

I feel I have grown as a photographer in terms of my aesthetic sense.

It is moving more towards minimalism, black and white and more natural looking.

Tasneem, thank you so much again for inspiring me : )

Love !

CHENNAI TIMES

My visit to Chennai was a good start to 2015. I always wanted to visit South India after extensively visiting the North, East and West, and finally got this chance.

It was a packed schedule of six days with three weddings to document. I shot my first Muslim wedding and second shot with the ever-so-awesome photographer Varun Suresh. You all will get to see the weddings in upcoming blog posts but a few shots from a personal project are below. I am trying to document as many patterns of nature as possible. And I am quite happy with the images I got here in Chennai.

Chennai Cats

I also had a chance to meet and work with this wonderful team of cinematographers from Chennai, Anvitha & Naveen. You can see their work on Vimeo. Anvitha and me have been friends for quite sometime now and had met her only in 2010. It was really nice meeting and working with her.

Anvitha Naveen Chennai 2015

I managed a glimpse of the beautiful land of Tamil Nadu, so many sights, tastes and emotions to soak in. I missed visiting Marina Beach, may be thats for my next visit. I visited the beautiful Kapaleeshwarar Temple and it literally took my breath away. Southern architecture also known as Dravidian architecture has always fascinated me.

Chennai Auto. The driver was cleaning up his auto and I asked him if he could park the auto in the spot I wanted and he happily did : )

Chennai Auto

My love for South India is not limited just to architecture but extends into sarees, jewellery and food too. Early on I had started collecting silk sarees which have become an inseperable part of me. I am also saving up for temple jewellery.

Anvitha graciously agreed to take me to Nalli. A visiting to Nalli's oldest shop (since 1928) was definitely on top of my list. I was in a wonderland!

Chennai Silks
chennai times

I had a chance to visit one of the oldest breakfast place Saravana Bhawan and loved the chutneys they served. However the idlis and dosas of Murugan Idli Shop are so much better. I think they should team up and cook what they are best at !

I also got a chance to dine at Mahamudra by Isha life. It is a boutique restaurant and I would highly recommend for healthy and wholesome eating.

I am really hoping to go back soon and probably visit surrounding places like Dakshin Chitra, Pondicherry and Sri Lanka! So any of you plan to get married here, I will happily book my tickets !

I will leave you all here by wishing you a very Happy New year ! Times are passing by too quickly ! I have no idea what 2015 has in store for me but I am looking to explore more in terms of a visual artist. I am also hoping for more travel.

And also give way to a special project that I have been working on for quite sometime now, a new blog perhaps shall see the light soon !

BRIGHTER THAN SUNSHINE

I need to confess that I honestly did nothing in this photo-session. But just got lucky by being there and witnessing this utterly gorgeous family!

We took a few pictures in the nearby garden and thought of resting a little bit and return back in sometime. I went up to their house and the light was so so beautiful that I thought of continuing the photo-session.

COFFEE & SEA SALT

Coffee happens to be husband's favourite so much so that he woke me up one fine morning at 7am and asked me out for a coffee date. As happy as I was then, I decided to make full use of this opportunity and take some pictures of rarely sighted Mr. Husband!

Starbucks Juhu happens to his favourite place for the decor is excellent and sustainable design and build methodologies are a part of Starbucks design concepts.

We also went to another of my favourite place that is not too far and the result is the above pictures : )

I can take you there for some portraits if any of you are interested, write me a mail  :)

And I also got lucky with husband taking pictures of me !

Nivedita and Sagar wanted to document this special phase in their life and I am so glad they thought of me ! Nivedita was going too have her Bengali Baby Shower "Shaad" and I have never got a chance to witness one so I thought of scheduling their Maternity shoot on the Shaad Day so I could see the ceremony and also take pictures!

Those who know me would know how much I am fond of the whole bengali culture and the Calcutta city in particular ! I was extremely excited for the Shaad ceremony and the Bengali food : )

Nivedita looked absolutely divine and the whole transformation from the dresses to the traditional Bengali saree made way to these beautiful images.

Her mum is a vision to behold ! I was so eager for her pictures after I had seen her at their wedding and didn't leave a chance to take her pictures. I am guilty of sidelining the couple because Nivedita's mum had all my attention !

You see the beauty runs in the family ! Nivedita with her sister Annindita !

AGASTYA & HIS FAMILY

What better time to take some family pictures than the occasion of Father's Day! Amrutha wanted some family pictures and we got lucky with beautiful weather over the weekend. I met them at the nearby park and her son Agastya is an absolute darling!

Very very well-mannered and caring ( he wanted to share everything he got with me : ) ), very smart (He knows when a meteor hits earth, it makes a crater ) So delighted to meet the family of my Japanese teacher after 8 long years !

Starting out with my favourite frame of the day.

It was a beautiful ride back home from shoot and it had just showered in the city and the air was nice and cool. It was High tide at the sea and I could see the water splashing up on the road and the sea-link looked beautiful.

It was quite not possible to not take a picture. Following are the pictures from midnight ride back home.
